Unit Information

This unit of competency suits people that are working or seeking work in operational roles in surface coal mining. This typically applies to operational staff and contractors.

For students that are not employed, they must be seeking employment in in a role that requires this competency. Students must seek access to a suitable workplace in order to complete a log book to achieve a successful outcome. A Statement of Attendance will be issued on successful completion of Phase 2 of the training program.

On successful completion of the training program students will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for RIISS00034 Surface Coal Mine Safety Sill Set.

Program of study

Phase 1 Self-Paced Study

One (1) week prior to the student attending class where the student will study the learner resource and prepare to attend class. Students are expected to read and understand the theory delivered in the learner resource and be properly prepared to attend the face to face class training and assessment.

Students are provided with:

  • An Australian Management and Safety Training Learner Guide
  • Student Study Schedule

The Australian Management & Safety Training trainer and assessor will ask for evidence of this activity prior to commencing the face to face training days. The Student Study Schedule that is issued to the student has provision for the student to make a declaration to confirm they have read and understood the pre-reading material.

Phase 2 Face to face training and assessment

Two (2) days face to face class training and assessment of eight (8) hours per day:

  • Face to face class presentation and training
  • Trainer led training
  • Trainer led assessment
  • Two (2) days of eight (8) hours duration each day. Face to face training in class
  • Underpinning knowledge assessment (face to face)
  • Practical assessment (face to face)
  • Revision
  • Opportunities for questions, answers and feedback

On successful completion of Phase 2 students will receive a Statement of Attendance. They must successfully complete Phase 3 before a Statement of Attainment may be issued.

Phase 3 - Workplace Log Book

Three (3) months to complete a log book in a suitable workplace.

Workplace assessment for this skill set is designed to assess the student's competence to carry out tasks safely in the workplace. Assessment methods enable the student to apply knowledge and demonstrate skills in the context of the work environment.

Students will record ten (10) hours per week. The Log Book records 12 weeks of specific workplace tasks and activities.
